Here is a simple step by step guide to removing stumps:

Step 1. Cut out the top of the plant or tree to a manageable size. Give yourself room around the plant or tree to work.
Step 2. Using a spade, star the stump removal process. Start digging a trench around the stump. Do this all around the stump --- make sure to go blow the roots. This will take time. Using your spade continue to maneuver until you reach the main roots and continue to loosen the soil around the tree/plant stump.
Step 3. Now dig around the stump as much as possible with the spade. Now using a landscape bar cut out as many of the roots around the stump as possible. Find the thick stumps and once you have loosened the stump and the soil, stick the bar into the soil and move the stump back and forth. This process will get increasing easier as the roots break off from the soil.
Step 4: Lift the bar out of the ground and then stab it back in around the stump and continue to leverage your weight to get the stump to move above the ground. Soon, you will find the stump come loose from the ground and its above the ground. Congratulations the stump is out of the ground and your hard work paid off!!
